Have you ever had the opportunity to watch a youngster play on the computer? It's amazing how they instinctively move the mouse or bang on the keyboard. Ask any grandparent and they are most likely to say that their grandchildren are light years ahead of them when it comes to technology. Children just seem to have a knack for computers. A Computer can definitely be great learning tool for a growing child. However, there is something that all parents should know before they bring this technology into their home and to their child's fingertips. The personal computer has become the latest tool utilized by offenders in their quest to exploit vulnerable children who venture off into their new virtual playgrounds.

The Twentieth Century will inevitably bring with it an enormous surge of technological innovations. Today, as the world's technology sector continues to expand, more and more people are compelled to become involved. The Internet, specifically, the World Wide Web, provides a medium in which the average individual can experiment with the benefits associated with the emerging computerized society we are in the midst of developing.

Within the last five years, both the growth and usage of the Internet has expanded at an enormous rate. It can be safe to assume that the Internet and the terms associated with it are becoming a part of the vernacular. Unless you have been living under a rock or have been the unfortunate owner of a "dinosaur," the term used to describe an old and antiquated personal computer, you have probably come into some contact with the Internet. Whether you've been exposed to it or not is a totally different issue.

Abstract

Take a moment and reminisce about your childhood days. Remember the chest or crate stuffed with all your favorite toys and games? Think about those adrenaline rushes you experienced each time you rummaged through and found just the toy or game you were looking for. This same kind of feeling is mimicked in the mind of a dumpster diver who sorts through mounds of rubbish while looking for that special treasure. In this age of 'paperless offices' and technological innovations; trash cans continue to stake their place in the world. This paper will discuss dumpster diving as a form of computer attack. It will analyze the motives of those individuals who take part in attacks of this sort. Furthermore, real life scenarios of dumpster diving will be presented. Moreover, suggested methods of protection for the tangible information and objects thrown out to the world on a daily basis will be examined. Finally, several conclusions will be drawn with regards to dumpster diving.

Abstract

Scam Artists have been around for centuries. Time progressed and technological innovations emerged and so have a new breed of con artist; the online fraudster. Utilizing various aspects and tools of the Internet, the online fraudster has become more successful then ever in defrauding a large target audience. So successful, that the issue has been the subject of much concern in recent years. Although, much is being done on multiple levels of government and within the public and private sectors, online fraud is still continuing to thrive. As long as the fraudster is motivated by greed and able to deceive others, fraud will always be in existence.

Abstract


This paper focuses on Internet and electronic mail based viruses and worms and how they function. Moreover, the languages in which these viruses are written and distributed, specifically Microsoft's Visual Basic Scripting (VBS) and Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML), and examples of each are discussed in detail. In addition, mechanisms for defense and prevention against such viruses and worms are also evaluated.
